Fasteners hold two or more parts together with a removable joint. Bolts, nuts, washers, anchors, studs and rivets form this group. The safety of a machine, a steel structure or a ship often depends on its smallest part — a correctly chosen bolt.
Main Groups
- Bolts: DIN 933 (full thread), DIN 931 (partial), DIN 912 (socket), DIN 7991 (countersunk).
- Nuts: DIN 934 (hex) and DIN 985 (nyloc) — nyloc prevents loosening under vibration.
- Washers: DIN 125 spreads load, DIN 127 spring washer resists loosening.
- Anchors: For concrete, brick and aerated block.
Strength Grades
- 8.8: Standard for general machinery and structures.
- 10.9: High-load joints, heavy machinery.
- 12.9: Critical, highly stressed joints — harder but more brittle.
Higher is not always better: under impact and fatigue, 12.9 can behave more brittle than 8.8.
Coatings
- Zinc plated: General corrosion protection.
- Hot-dip galvanised: Outdoor steel structures.
- A2 (304) stainless: Humid and general outdoor.
- A4 (316) stainless: Seawater, shipyards, chloride environments.
