Most industrial failures trace back to insufficient or incorrect lubrication. Bearings, shafts and chains last far longer when maintained with the right lubrication equipment.
Grease Gun Types
- Manual (lever) grease gun: The most common; pistol type for one-hand use, lever type for high pressure.
- Pneumatic grease gun: For high-volume servicing, connects to a compressor.
- Cordless grease gun: Practical on site without air or power lines.
Grease Nipples
Selected by access angle: straight (180°), 45° and 90°. Common threads are M6, M8, M10 and 1/8" NPT.
Five Rules of Correct Lubrication
- Clean the nipple before greasing — trapped dust acts as abrasive paste.
- Don't over-grease: filling a bearing completely causes heat and seal failure; 1/3–1/2 of free space is typical.
- Don't mix grease types — lithium and calcium bases can break down together.
- Follow a schedule, not a breakdown.
- Match the grease to temperature, water exposure and speed.
