Lifting equipment is the most safety-critical link in industry. An error when choosing a wire rope, chain sling or hoist becomes a life-safety issue directly.
What Is WLL?
Every lifting device carries a Working Load Limit — the maximum load it can carry safely, not its breaking load. Breaking load is typically 4–7× the WLL; that margin is the safety factor. Never exceed the WLL and never use equipment with an unreadable tag.
Sling Angle: The Most Common Mistake
- 0° (vertical): Load is shared equally.
- 60°: Each leg carries about 15% more.
- 120°: Each leg carries double the share.
Lifting 1 tonne at 120° means each leg carries 1 tonne. Keep angles as narrow as possible.
Wire Rope or Chain Sling?
- Wire rope: Flexible, light, economical. Crushes on sharp edges — use edge protection.
- Chain sling (Grade 80/100): Heat and abrasion resistant, adjustable. Preferred in heavy industry and shipyards.
- Polyester webbing sling: Won't scratch painted surfaces, but vulnerable to sharp edges and chemicals.
Hooks and Eye Bolts
Lifting eye bolts (DIN 580) and hooks must also carry a WLL rating. Using a standard bolt for lifting is dangerous — eye bolts are purpose-made and certified.
