Abrasives: Choosing Cutting Discs, Grinding Wheels and Flap Discs

Abrasives: Choosing Cutting Discs, Grinding Wheels and Flap Discs - Product Guide

Abrasives are the most consumed items in any workshop. The wrong cutting disc slows the job, spoils the material and — worse — can shatter and cause serious injury.

Cutting Disc or Grinding Wheel?

  • Cutting disc: Thin (1–3 mm), designed for radial force only. Grinding with a cutting disc will shatter it.
  • Grinding wheel: Thick (6–8 mm), designed for side-face pressure — weld cleaning and deburring.

Which Disc for Stainless Steel?

Always use an INOX-marked, iron-free (Fe/S/Cl free) disc on stainless. A standard disc embeds iron particles into the surface; those particles rust and start corrosion staining on otherwise corrosion-resistant steel.

Disc Speed (RPM) and Safety

Every disc states a maximum RPM. Your grinder must not exceed it. Check for cracks before use, respect the expiry date (resin discs absorb moisture and weaken), never remove the guard, and always wear eye protection.

Flap Discs

Flap discs balance grinding and sanding. Coarser grit (40–60) for weld cleaning; finer (80–120) for finishing.
